3D Laser Scanning
3D Laser Scanning
D&T Process Optimization is focused on efficiency and quality in all that we do. The collection of data has evolved over recent years. Field information which was once collected by a team of engineers with clip boards and measuring tapes, is now replaced by high-definition digital imaging (scanning) instruments run by a single field engineer. 3D laser scanning is our preferred method of documenting field information, as it offers several advantages over traditional methods of collecting data.
Advantages of Scanning Your Project
- Accuracy: 3D measurement of facilities, equipment, and site features can be measured with an extremely high degree of accuracy, much better than manual measurements.
- High-Definition Color Images: Scanning deliverables include an active 3D color photo of the project site, with picture resolution up to 165 megapixels.
- Speed: Scanning will capture 976,000 data points per second. This translates to capturing a high volume of information in a single trip to the project site.
- Safety: Scanning existing building or equipment features can be done from a safe distance using Class 1 (eye-safe) laser technology. D&T can capture piping tie-points or identify exact piping and structural steel member sizes from a safe location at grade level.
- Accelerate Project Schedule: Collecting accurate field data is the first step for many projects. Scanning allows for the collection of billions of data points in a matter of hours or days versus weeks.
- As-Built Conditions: Scanning existing facilities will accurately locate and measure all features of your building, utilities, and manufacturing equipment. Information from the scan is then used to create AutoCAD backgrounds for building and process documentation, or 3D color pictures for coordination with plant personnel. In addition, the color scan imagery can be integrated into a virtual training program helping personnel to quickly become familiar with the plant machinery, and general surroundings.
- Interference Reduction: The use of scanning technology allows engineers to build a 3D model over the scan data and better identify interference points with new equipment.
- Automated 3D Model Development: Once scanning is complete, D&T uses software to automate the creation of the 3D design model. Our VirtuSurv and PointSense software is capable of recognizing plant assets including piping and structural steel shapes from the point cloud scan. This feature allows us to automate the creation of the 3D model using “Smart Objects” from the scanned data.
